Wilkinson and his collaborators made major rock-art discoveries in Egypt's Eastern Desert. However, this book overreaches the import and merits of these discoveries.

No doubt it was very exciting indeed to find these images pecked in stone in prehistoric times, but Wilkinson's attempt to dramatize his account of the discoveries is a literary by: Missing has been a systematic study of the peoples of the Eastern Desert—the area between the Red Sea and the Nile Valley—in whose territories these ports, roads, mines, and quarries were historical overview of the Eastern Desert in the shape of a roughly chronological narrative presented in this book fills that gap.

BAR International Series, Archaeopress I am delighted to report that Tony Judd's book "Rock Art of the Eastern Desert of Egypt" has been released by BAR. Based on work completed for PhD this is a comprehensive overview of the Eastern Desert's engravings.

Please note that the summary from the Archaeopress website seems to confuse this. In both Eastern and Western Deserts a vast collection rock art has survived. The geology of the Eastern Desert is one of its most remarkable features. Geology in the Western Desert is more dispersed but is the only place in Egypt where the earliest layers can be seen at the surface.
